EF 28-80mm f3.5-5.6 II USM

introduced 1999

The EF 28-80mm f3.5-5.6 II USM lens has been developed as the ideal match for the EOS 500 camera. The range of 28mm to 80mm covers the focal lengths most used by non-professional photographers. In addition, the built-in flash of the EOS 500 can be used at all zoom setting without the compact lens barrel blocking any of the light.

It has been possible to produce this small wide-range zoom lens by using two aspherical lens elements among the total of nine elements. Aspherical lenses are very efficient at overcoming lens aberrations, reducing the number of elements needed to achieve excellent results. A flare-cut diaphragm is positioned in front of the final lens element, eliminating harmful light and giving a higher image resolution.

A micro USM (ultrasonic motor) is used to drive the autofocusing system. This gives near-silent, high-speed AF operation. Manual focusing is possible by switching the lens to ‘Manual’ mode and using the manual focusing ring. The closest focusing distance is 0.38 metre, giving a magnification of 0.26x at the 80mm setting.

The lens accepts 58mm mount filters - only one can be used at a time in the AF mode. The EW-60C detachable lens hood (optional extra) can be reverse mounted for convenient storage. The lens hood must not be used when shooting with the built-in flash.
