EF 22-55mm f4.5-5.6 USM introduced 1998 The EF 22-55mm is a compact, lightweight standard zoom. The 22mm ultra-wide-angle coverage os made possible by use of a replica aspherical element. Other features include Micro USM control for near-silent, high-speed autofocusing, plus a smoother zoom operation than earlier lenses. The external design includes a bright metallic ring towards the front of the lens to complement the metallic finish of the EOS IX cameras. When used with the smaller film format of Advanced Photo System models, the effective focal length range becomes 28-69mm (35mm format equivalent).
