TECHNOLOGIES
This document explains new technologies not found in predecessor models
10fps continuous shooting
The EOS 7D Mark II is able to shoot up to 10 full 20.2 megapixel resolution photos in a single second, recording images as JPEG, RAW or both simultaneously. Up to 31 RAW files or an unlimited number of JPEGs (up to the capacity of the card) can be captured in a single burst without any loss in performance, and the shooting rate can be customised to suit the pace of the subject being photographed whilst being recorded to the dual card slots.
New shutter and mirror drive system
Thanks to a newly-developed shutter and mirror drive system, the shutter unit of the EOS 7D Mark II is durable for 200,000 shutter-release cycles (tested under normal shooting conditions and to Canon standards). The new system features two motors – one dedicated to the mirror drive and one dedicated to the shutter mechanism. The system also uses bearings with a high energy transmission rate, designed to shorten the shutter-cocking time during high continuous shooting.
The main and secondary mirror of the camera is driven by a dedicated motor which enables the mirrors to remain stationary during continuous shooting – ensuring high-precision AI Servo AF and a stable image appearing in the viewfinder. Both mirrors are supported by an absorption mechanism to limit the bounce of the mirror. When the mirror is down, a mass damper applies a force opposite to the secondary mirror’s bounce direction to reduce bounce and enable accurate focusing.
The parts that make up the mirror drive system are made from materials which are specifically designed to reduce overall mirror vibrations. Both the shutter-cocking motor and mirror-driving motor are placed in a floating support to ensure that any mechanical noise is silenced and vibration is minimised to maintain image quality.
65-point, all cross-type AF System
The EOS 7D Mark II features a customisable 65-point AF system making it easier for photographers to acquire pin-sharp focus and tracking for all subjects. Each focus point is a ‘cross-type’ when used with a compatible lens, ensuring the camera can lock on to both horizontal and vertical detail quickly and accurately. The AF System’s centre AF point supports dual cross-type focusing at f2.8 and f5.6 and cross-type at f8 (with compatible EF lenses), while the vertical array of five AF points at the centre of the AF System enable high-precision, staggered-array, dual-line focusing. To assist shooting in extreme low light, the EOS 7D Mark II centre point is sensitive down to -3EV, which enables shooting in conditions such as under moonlight.
A brand new dedicated AF area selection lever on the EOS 7D Mark II enables photographers to easily and quickly switch between AF area modes, allowing them to change the area of focus without taking their eye away from the viewfinder.
New metering system: 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor,
with IR detection and EOS iTR AF
To ensure consistent, accurate exposure metering, the EOS 7D Mark II uses a new 150,000-pixel sensor, with 153,600 effective pixels, the highest resolution featured in an EOS DSLR to date. The sensor is divided into 252 areas – each of which are individually analysed – and the correct settings are either set automatically or recommended to the photographer.
The metering sensor also features IR pixels to detect infrared light, helping the advanced EOS Scene Detection System to analyse the scene and improve AF precision. These pixels also work alongside the RGB pixels to detect brightness, colour and faces, to ensure consistent exposure at all times.
Canon’s iTR AF technology works alongside the advanced metering sensor to provide improved tracking and AF performance. The sensor’s high resolution facilitates enhanced AF point selection based on face and colour information to help track subjects across the frame.
Flicker Detection
The EOS 7D Mark II is the first EOS DSLR to feature a Flicker Detection mode. When shooting under artificial light, such as fluorescent light bulbs, flickering light which the eye can’t see is produced and, as a result, can cause inconsistent brightness and colour when shooting bursts of images. The camera’s Flicker Detection mode intelligently detects light frequencies of 100Hz and 120Hz and times the capture of each shot to coincide with the peak brightness of the flickering light source, to achieve consistent results.
Timer shooting functions
The EOS 7D Mark II features a range of built-in timer shooting functions that enable photographers to control their camera over set periods of time – a great way to record a slowly changing scene and create time-lapse movies. In a first for EOS DSLRs, an interval timer allows images to be recorded at pre-programmed intervals of between one second, through to 99 hours, 59 mins and 59 seconds, and between unlimited, one or 99 shots. For extreme long-exposure photography, the camera’s shutter can also be locked up in bulb mode for a specified time.
20.2 MP APS-C CMOS sensor
The EOS 7D Mark II features a new 20.2 MP APS-C CMOS sensor that provides a balance of increased resolution and low noise performance. This enables the capture of the widest range of scenes with low-noise. There is a wide native ISO speed range of 100 to 16000, expandable to 51200.
Built-in GPS and digital compass
The camera incorporates a range of GPS functions, similar to Canon’ s external GPS Receiver GP-E2. Images and movie clips can be geotagged with the exact global position of capture and, thanks to a new time setting, also logged with co-ordinated universal time.
The EOS 7D Mark II is also the first EOS camera to feature a built-in digital compass which features a triple-axes geomagnetic and acceleration sensor, enabling photographers to record longitude, latitude, elevation and compass direction.
Intelligent Viewfinder II
The camera features a new viewfinder which provides approximately 100% coverage and 1.0x magnification, together with an improved 22mm eyepoint to offer a natural and wider viewing angle. Using a transparent LCD, the screen overlays AF information and a shooting grid, as well as a dual-axis electronic level, making it easier for photographers to frame and capture their subject accurately. In addition, the viewfinder also displays the current shooting mode, as well as extra shooting information such as white balance, drive mode and Flicker Detection status.
USB 3.0 Super Speed Interface
The EOS 7D Mark II incorporates a new Super Speed USB 3.0 digital terminal, allowing photographers to quickly and easily transfer images to external devices, as well as shoot tethered for even faster image transfer.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF –
high-performance focusing for movies and Live View
The camera includes Canon’s revolutionary Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology which provides smooth, high-performance focus tracking when shooting movies and fast AF acquisition when shooting images in Live View mode. Each pixel features two photo diodes that can be read independently during autofocus or together to capture the image.
The EOS 7D Mark II is the first EOS DSLR to provide control over the tracking speed and response sensitivity of Dual Pixel CMOS AF. It is now possible to adjust the AF speed to one of three settings – Standard, Slower and Slow – as well as control how sensitive the AF system is to sudden movement and the introduction of new subjects as they appear in front of the main subject. The responsiveness can be set to one of five settings, from - 2 (Locked on), where the existing subject will be prioritised over new subjects, to +2 (responsive), where the AF system will quickly respond to new subjects entering the AF area.
Full HD with slow motion capture
The EOS 7D Mark II features advanced video functions including Full HD (1080p) capture at variable frame rates up to 50 or 60fps – ideal for fast moving action or slow-motion footage that looks silky smooth, revealing the subtleties of motion in the captured footage.
The camera also offers HDMI output of 1920x1080 uncompressed 4:2:2, 8-bit, footage to external recorders, allowing content to be easily integrated into different workflows. New built-in headphone and microphone sockets also ensure audio can be captured as sharp as the visual output.
