Despite – or perhaps because of – the number of new camera bodies and lenses launched by Canon in the last few years, there has been little to get excited about in terms of new Canon flash equipment.
The Speedlite EL-100 was launched in 2018, at the same time as the ground-breaking EOS R and RP cameras. It’s not surprising, therefore, that it might have been somewhat overlooked. Although designed for these first R-series cameras, the Speedlite EL-100 is compatible with all EOS models launched since 2007.
No full-frame EOS model has a built-in flash unit. This means there is a need for a small, compact and easily portable flashgun for the odd times that you need a little bit of extra light.
Many photographers who shoot with a full-frame EOS camera may also have one of the bigger flash units, such as the Speedlite 600EX II-RT. Because the 600EX-series guns are significantly more powerful, they are also bigger and heavier. This in itself comes with advantages and disadvantages.
