EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM

Canon press release 18 February 2016

Alongside the EOS 80D, Canon is also unveiling an all-purpose lens – the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM with new Nano USM technology, and an optional Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1, for smooth zoom control when shooting movies and remote operation via Wi-Fi (when used with compatible devices).Offering a wide range of focal lengths it is an ideal all-purpose lens.

To match the versatility of EOS 80D, Canon's new EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM lens provides high performance auto-focus for movies and stills with the focal range to shoot wide, or up close, within a single lens. The EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM is the first of Canon's lenses to feature Nano USM focus technology – delivering smooth, quiet autofocus (AF) for movies and blistering speed for stills.

The new Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1 is a compact and lightweight accessory designed for the EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM to enable smooth, fingertip zoom control when shooting movies, ideal for capturing professional-looking documentary footage, with the option to control via Wi-Fi.

New technologies

Nano USM
Nano USM is a newly-developed lens drive system that combines the quietness and smoothness of a STM (Stepping Motor) system with speed within the realms of the Canon Ring - type USM (Ultrasonic Motor) system - whilst still achieving a compact size. The drive speed of the focusing lens in the EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM has also been increased by up to 2.5 times (wide) and by up to 4.3 times (telephoto) compared to the predecessor EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM model.

The Nano USM unit comprises an elastic metal body and a ceramic voltage element. By changing the frequency and phase of the high - frequency voltage applied to the ceramic voltage element, drive control of rotational direction and speed is achieved. In perfe ct combination, frequency control and phase control provide focus lens drive with a control algorithm thatÕs ideally suited to both still image and movie shooting.

Power Zoom Adapter accessory
The EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM includes new electrical contacts and a gear underneath the body to enable compatibility with the new Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1 . This allows the zoom to be operated smoothly via the zoom lever or via Wi-Fi when used with compatible EOS camera bodies and smart devices running Canon's Camera Connect app or via PCs/Macs running the supplied EOS Utility software .

Image Stabilizer
The Image Stabilizer unit is newly designed and achieves an image stabilisation effect of 4 shutter speeds according to CIPA testing standards. Image stabilisation control in the EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM is optimised for the sensitivity of the corrective optics and characteristics of the IS unit. This unit also features a function that distinguishes between normal shots and panning shots based on the output signals from the vibration gyro, and automatically selects the optimal IS mode.
