Picture library

The main purpose of the EOS magazine picture library is to provide photographs for the many technique articles which are published in the magazine. However, we occasionally supply images to other publishers.

As with most libraries, we prefer to receive a lot of pictures from a few photographers. You are more likely to be successful if you can send regular submissions. Don’t rely on pictures you have taken in the past - we want to see current work. Often, a few good pictures will suggest an idea for a whole article.

All pictures must have been taken with an EOS camera (though not necessarily an EOS lens).

General images

Good quality general shots are always of interest. Ideally, each image should be accompanied by technical details (camera, lens, exposure, etc). The more technical details attached, the more likely it is to be used.

Technique images

Our main requirement is for images which demonstrate photographic techniques, or show the use of different lenses and other camera accessories. In practice, this covers most photographs. However, unlike other picture libraries, we require full details of the equipment and techniques used for each picture.

We need photographs which demonstrate any techniques which can be carried out with EOS cameras. These include exposure compensation, fill-in flash, spot metering, bounce flash, multiple exposures, macro photography, fast AF function, image stabilisation lenses, and much more.

While most photographs show some aspect of photographic technique, or the use of a lens or accessory, some images demonstrate it better than others. If you are shooting a landscape with a wide-angle lens, for example, including a subject close to the camera will emphasise the steep perspective change. Better still, take a second picture from the same position with a standard lens to provide a comparison.

Comparison shots

Comparison shots are one of the strengths of the EOS magazine photo library. The demonstration of a filter, for example, is only really effective if pictures taken both with and without the filter are shown. If you are showing how a reflector is used, take some pictures without the reflector. If you are demonstrating spot metering, take a picture to show the same subject shot with centre-weighted metering. Almost every technique will benefit from comparison pictures - and this increases your publication fees.

Sequences

Using a sequence of photos is often a good way to illustrate a point. For example, take pictures from the same position using different settings of a zoom lens, or lenses of different focal lengths. Not only will you increase the chance of a sale, but you’ll also get paid more if a sequence of pictures is used.
