TIPA award for EOS 5D

Every year, editors of photo magazines which are members of the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) vote for their favourite products. Among the cameras to receive an award this year is the EOS 5D - the best D-SLR professional camera. The citation from the editors reads:

"The EOS 5D is the first digital camera that offers a full-frame, 24x36mm sensor at a realistic price, and there’s no compromise on image quality. With 12.8 million pixels available, there’s plenty of resolution for huge prints, and they’re big pixels, too, which means lower noise and higher quality in the final image. Picture sharpness is excellent, and the high resolution and superb image processing means artefacts are rendered invisible. Moreover, the size of the sensor means that the actual focal lengths of Canon EF lenses are used, and with no ‘crop factor’ to swing the results, this gives the angle-of- view and the large viewfinder image that 35mm film photographers know and love."

Significant price increase for film

It seems that there is more pressure on film users to switch to digital. Kodak is increasing the price of its consumer and professional films by as much as 17%. Fuji film is also going to cost more. Rising raw material and energy costs are to blame.

Photokina moves

When Photokina opens at the Kolnmesse in Cologne on 26 September, it will take place in the venue's four new purpose-built exhibition halls, together with state-of-the art support facilities. Another big change is the decision to integrate professional and consumer products. 1600 suppliers from more than 50 countries are expected. For more information visit the Photokina website.

Consumers confused

Half the consumer electronic products returned to stores in the US are in good working order, but customers can't figure out how they work, says a recent study conducted at the Technical University of Eindhoven, in the Netherlands. On average, American consumers will try for just 20 minutes to get a new gadget to work before giving up.

Canon No.1 in USA

Canon continues to gain digital market share after toppling Kodak from the number one spot in the US with a 19.3% share.

Direct Print demonstrations

Do you want to see how easy it is to print direct from your camera to a Canon inkjet printer? There are demonstration days at Jessops photo stores across the UK in June and July. Search for your nearest event.

There are also in-store demonstration days at Canon accredited Digital Centres. These offer comprehensive product demonstrations and give you the opportunity to ask questions. Find out more about these UK events here.
