Lead in cameras
EU legislation which comes into force in July bans the use of certain
hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. In the
main, cameras affected are those which use lead solder in their circuit
boards, but other restricted substances include mercury and cadmium.
These substances have not been banned because of any danger to camera
users. The risk of lead poisoning from a soldered circuit board is
remote. The new EU directive is intended to reduce environmental
pollution during the manufacture of the product, and when it is thrown
away.
Actually, calling the directive new is not entirely correct. After a
period of discussion, it became EU law on 13 February 2003, but only
comes into effect on 1 July 2006. After this date, all products sold
within the EU must be compliant.
Canon began to prepare for the directive as early as 2002. The EOS-1D
Mark II, introduced in April 2004, was fully compliant, as were other
new products from 2005 onwards.
We are not aware of any current Canon cameras or printers which do not
meet the requirements of the new legislation. Equipment sold before July
2006 is not affected by the new legislation.
Sensor cleaning kits
Does your digital sensor need a clean? Sensor cleaning kits have been
flying off our shelves ever since we added them to our online shop.
Do you need a Canon instruction manual? We can supply them for cameras,
lenses and accessories dating back to 1959.
Browse these items, and more, at the EOS magazine shop.
Secondhand service closing
Jessops is closing its secondhand service. The growth of digital
photography is blamed for a rapid decline in levels of consumer demand
for used equipment.
Fortunately, the EOS classified service is here to fill the gap. Our
newly-launched site is the place to buy and
sell all EOS and non-Canon cameras and accessories.
Basic adverts are free to EOS magazine subscribers. Make sure you
register using the password published on page 7 of the April-June 2006
issue of the magazine. You will find the password at the bottom of the
right-hand panel.
EOS Forums growth continues
EOS Forums, which we launched at the end of January, continues its
spectacular growth. It now has over 2000 members, with nearly 19,000
posts in over 1700 topics. You can join the discussions here.
You don't need to log in to view the posts, but you will need to
register if you want to reply, start a new topic or ask a question.
Registration is free.
Direct Print demonstrations
Do you want to see how easy it is to print direct from your camera to a
Canon inkjet printer? There are demonstration days at photo stores
across the UK during coming months. Search for your

There are also in-store demonstration days at Canon accredited Digital
