The EF 70-200mm f2.8L USM lens has enjoyed strong support from professionals and enthusiasts since its introduction in 1995

Now Canon has introduced a new lens which retains all the features of the earlier model, but adds the benifits of image stabilization (IS). This increases the range of EF IS zoom lenses to four.

Image stabilization uses gyro motors and a floating lens group to counteract movement of the lens. With previous IS lenses, there is a benefit of about two stops (i.e. when compared with a simliar non-IS lens, you can shoot with a shutter speed about two stops slower without any noticeable increase in the effects of the camera shake).

But Canon has used a newly-developed image stabiliser unit in this lens, giving a shutter speed benefit of up to three stops.

The main features of the new EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM lens are:

• L-type zoom lens with built-in image stabiliser
• image stabiliser operates about 0.5 second after the shutter button is partialy depressed
• four UD (ultra dispersion) lens elements provide excellent compensation for residual chromatic aberration and high image quality over the full zoom range
• high dust and moisture resistance for shooting in harsh conditions
• inner focus design plus ring USM provides silent, high-speed autofocusing (surpasses AF performance of EF 70-200mm f2.8L lens)
• circular aperture provides attractive defocusing (bokeh) effects
• 1.4m minimum focusing distance over the full zooming range
• front of lens does not rotate during focusing (excellent for polarizing filters)
• manual focusing available in AF mode (full-time mechanical manual focusing function is built-in to the lens)
• compatible with EF Extenders; AF and IS features operate with Extenders in use
• wide easy-to-handle focusing and zoom rings
