TECHNOLOGIES
This document explains technologies found in the EOS 80D
45 point all cross-type AF system
The EOS 80D features a new high-performance, flexible 45 point all cross-type AF system. When used with a compatible lens, each focus point is an f5.6 cross-type, which ensures the camera can lock on to both horizontal and vertical detail quickly and precisely. The technology delivers accurate, fast autofocus and tracking over a wide area and across a range of subjects. Designed to shoot in a range of lighting conditions, with a variety of lens and extender combinations, the AF system is sensitive down to -3EV (moonlight). It contains 27 f8 compatible AF points (9 f8 cross-type) and one extra sensitive f2.8 and f5.6 dual cross-type point in the centre. For optimum flexibility, users have the choice of selecting four AF zone modes, which are superimposed in the viewfinder and can be quickly selected using the area selector button next to the shutter release.
24.2 megapixel CMOS sensor
Designed and manufactured by Canon, the 24.2 megapixel CMOS sensor of the EOS 80D incorporates the latest sensor technology to support Dual Pixel CMOS AF and Full HD at 60p, capturing images at high resolution with extraordinary levels of detail. An expanded ISO range of ISO 100-16,000 (H:25,600) is also available thanks to a new refinement process deployed for this sensor, enhancing the camera’s performance when shooting in low-light.
7fps drive system with reduced noise and vibration
A new compact motor, which has the characteristics of both a stepping motor and a DC motor, is used to drive the mirror in order to reduce noise. A floating support and improved motor acceleration/deceleration control reduces the mirror's rotation speed immediately before its up/down action. All of these improvements reduce mechanical sound and camera vibrations for improved image quality.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF
Dual Pixel CMOS AF is enhanced thanks to the improved sensor performance and revised AF algorithms in the camera. The EOS 80D offers increased maximum focus speed and the ability to have finer control over Movie Servo AF responsiveness and speed. Being able to fine-tune AF speed and sensitivity to new subjects provides videographers with an AF system that can pull focus and track subjects at a pace that fits the look and feel of their movie. Dual Pixel CMOS AF is now also possible with all EF and EF-S lenses and can be used in combination with continuous shooting during Live View.
Full HD with 60p
The EOS 80D features Full HD (1080p) movie capture, with continuous AF at variable frame rates up to 50 or 60fps – ideal for fast moving action or slow-motion footage that looks silky smooth, revealing the subtleties of motion in the captured footage. HDR movie and creative filters, including Dream, Old movies, Memory, Dramatic and Black and White, enable in-camera creative effects. Videographers can also enjoy full control over audio levels and can capture professional quality sound with headphone and microphone inputs. Movies can be recorded in MP4 format with IPB compression at up to 60fps for easy sharing and in MOV All-I compression at up to 30 fps.
Wi-Fi and NFC
Users can connect to a PC or Mac via the camera’s own wireless hotspot using the supplied EOS Utility software and shoot with the camera remotely. They can also shoot movies and stills remotely via compatible Android/iOS devices with the Canon Camera Connect App and enjoy a live view while recording. The app also enables easy wireless transfer of MP4 movies as well as full resolution or resized JPEGs. Compatibility with the Canon Connect Station enables users to wirelessly transfer and store their photos and movies with one tap connection via NFC, and then share them easily on an HDTV, on social media sites and online albums.
Timer shooting functions
The EOS 80D features a range of built-in timer shooting functions that enable photographers and videographers to control their camera over set lengths of time, to record a slowly changing scene and create time-lapse movies. The in-camera Timelapse mode allows videographers to specify the number of shots and time interval – the camera will then display the clip length and output a Full HD movie. The interval timer allows full resolution images to be recorded at pre-programmed intervals of between one second, through to 99 hours, 59 mins and 59 seconds, and between one, 99 or unlimited shots. For long-exposure photography, the camera’s shutter can also be locked up in the bulb mode for a specified length of time.

Excel in all areas of photography and video
Whatever subject you’re looking to explore – from sports, to wildlife, or action – the EOS 80D is extremely responsive, excelling in capturing everything in incredible, intricate detail. The new sensor provides stunning clarity and the freedom to crop in, while the new 45 all cross-type point AF system and 7fps shooting can freeze action with ultimate precision. For pin-point focusing or wide-area tracking, the AF points are individually selectable or grouped into areas, giving you greater control over composition regardless of where your subject is in the frame.
